Public Safety and Law Enforcement

Safe communities are the foundation of a strong Alabama. Families should be able to live, work, worship, and raise their children in neighborhoods where law and order are respected and where those who commit violent crimes are held accountable. Dr. Stewart Tankersley believes public safety is one of the most fundamental responsibilities of government.

Dr. Tankersley has long believed that the men and women of law enforcement deserve the respect, support, and resources necessary to do their jobs effectively.

Police officers and sheriff’s deputies face increasing challenges, and the state must ensure departments across Alabama can recruit and retain qualified officers while providing them with the training and equipment needed to keep communities safe.

As Lieutenant Governor and presiding officer of the Alabama Senate, Dr. Tankersley will work with members of the Legislature to advance policies that strengthen law enforcement agencies, improve officer recruitment and retention, and ensure officers have the support they need to carry out their duties.

Public safety also requires confronting the growing threat of drug trafficking and fentanyl distribution. These dangerous substances have devastated communities across the country, and Alabama must continue strengthening penalties for traffickers while improving cooperation between local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.

Dr. Tankersley believes government must stand firmly on the side of law-abiding citizens. As Lieutenant Governor, he will work with the Governor and the Legislature to support law enforcement, protect victims of crime, and ensure Alabama remains a safe place for families and businesses.
