Agriculture and Rural Alabama

Agriculture has shaped Alabama’s history and remains one of the most important pillars of the state’s economy and way of life. Farmers, ranchers, timber producers, and agricultural businesses not only provide food and resources, but also sustain rural communities and preserve traditions that have defined Alabama for generations.

Dr. Stewart Tankersley believes Alabama must remain firmly committed to supporting family farms and protecting the agricultural economy.

Today, farmers face real challenges, from rising fuel and input costs to supply chain disruptions and increasing regulatory pressures. These challenges threaten not only individual livelihoods but the long-term strength of rural Alabama.

As Lieutenant Governor, Dr. Tankersley will work with the Alabama Senate to advance practical policies that strengthen agricultural markets, reduce unnecessary regulatory burdens, and ensure farmers have the support they need to succeed. He believes government should be a partner to those who feed and sustain our state, not an obstacle.

Strong agriculture depends on strong rural communities. Across Alabama, small towns deserve access to economic opportunity, reliable infrastructure, and workforce development programs that allow families to build their futures close to home. Dr. Tankersley believes the Legislature should prioritize investments that strengthen rural economies while preserving the character and vitality of local communities.

Expanding access to reliable broadband is a critical part of that effort. In today’s economy, internet connectivity is no longer a luxury, it is essential. Students rely on it for education, businesses depend on it to grow and compete, and healthcare providers increasingly use it to deliver care through telemedicine. Yet many rural areas still lack dependable access.

Dr. Tankersley supports responsible investments to expand broadband infrastructure in underserved communities. Improving connectivity will open the door to new economic opportunities, support education and healthcare access, and help rural Alabama remain competitive in a rapidly changing economy.

Agriculture and rural communities are more than part of Alabama’s economy, they are the heart of the state’s identity. As Lieutenant Governor, Dr. Tankersley will work to ensure they remain strong, vibrant, and positioned for long-term success.
