Veterans and Military Families

Alabama has a proud tradition of military service. Thousands of veterans and active-duty service members call Alabama home, and their leadership, discipline, and dedication strengthen communities across the state.

Dr. Stewart Tankersley understands these sacrifices firsthand. As a Colonel in the Alabama Army National Guard and a physician who deployed three times to care for American service members overseas, he has seen the courage and commitment of those who wear the uniform.

Dr. Tankersley believes Alabama has a responsibility to ensure veterans have access to meaningful opportunities when they return home. Veterans possess valuable skills and experience that can strengthen Alabama’s workforce and economy.

As Lieutenant Governor, Dr. Tankersley will work with the Alabama Senate to expand workforce training opportunities, strengthen education programs for veterans, and support initiatives that help veterans transition successfully into civilian careers.

He also believes the Legislature should continue supporting policies that improve access to healthcare and community services for veterans and their families. Alabama’s military installations are critical to both national defense and the state economy, and maintaining strong partnerships with the defense industry will remain a priority.

Honoring veterans means more than words—it means ensuring they have the support, opportunities, and respect they have earned through their service.
