Second Amendment

The right to keep and bear arms is a fundamental freedom guaranteed by the United States Constitution and affirmed by the Alabama Constitution. Dr. Stewart Tankersley believes the Second Amendment protects the ability of law-abiding citizens to defend themselves, their families, and their communities.

For many Alabama families, responsible gun ownership is also a long-standing tradition. Hunting, sport shooting, and firearm safety are part of the culture and heritage of our state.

Dr. Tankersley believes these traditions should be respected and protected, and that law-abiding gun owners should never be treated like criminals.

Alabama has taken important steps in recent years to strengthen Second Amendment protections, including recognizing the right of responsible citizens to carry firearms without unnecessary government interference. Dr. Tankersley supports maintaining strong protections for the constitutional rights of Alabama citizens and believes government should always approach firearm policy with respect for those freedoms.

At the same time, public safety remains a priority. Laws should focus on holding criminals accountable and ensuring that those who commit violent crimes face serious consequences.

Efforts to reduce crime should focus on enforcing existing laws and supporting law enforcement rather than placing additional burdens on responsible gun owners.

As Lieutenant Governor, Dr. Stewart Tankersley will stand firmly in support of the Second Amendment and work to ensure that Alabama continues to protect the constitutional rights of its citizens. Responsible gun owners deserve leaders who will defend their freedoms and uphold the principles that have long guided our state and nation.
