Immigration and the Rule of Law

America is a nation built by immigrants, but it is also a nation built on the rule of law. Dr. Tankersley believes Alabama families deserve safe communities, secure borders, and an immigration system that works for the American people.

The federal government has the primary responsibility for securing our nation’s borders, and strong leadership in Washington is essential. President Trump has taken important steps to strengthen border security and restore enforcement of our immigration laws. But states like Alabama must also do their part to protect their communities and support the rule of law.

As Lieutenant Governor, Dr. Tankersley will support policies that ensure Alabama cooperates fully with federal immigration authorities and rejects any effort to establish sanctuary policies in our state. Alabama should never become a sanctuary state. State resources should be used to serve Alabama citizens, not to shield individuals who are in the country illegally.

Dr. Tankersley also supports stronger cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. He believes the Alabama Legislature should require every county in the state to participate in 287(g) training and partnerships with federal immigration officers. These programs allow properly trained local law enforcement agencies to work with federal authorities to identify and remove criminal illegal aliens who pose a threat to Alabama communities.

Dr. Tankersley believes immigration policy should also protect the economic opportunities of Alabama workers. Employers must follow the law when hiring workers, and employment verification systems should be enforced so that jobs go first to legal workers. Fair enforcement helps protect wages and ensures a level playing field for Alabama workers and businesses.

At the same time, Dr. Tankersley believes legal immigration remains an important part of the American story. Individuals who follow the law, work hard, and respect our values have long strengthened communities across the country, including here in Alabama.

Strong borders, respect for the rule of law, and cooperation between federal and state authorities are essential to keeping Alabama communities safe. As Lieutenant Governor, Dr. Stewart Tankersley will support policies that protect Alabama families while ensuring our state does its part to uphold the law and maintain safe communities.
