Gas Tax Relief

Every Alabama family feels it when they pull up to the gas pump. Higher fuel prices make it more expensive to get to work, take kids to school, and run a small business.

When gas prices go up, the cost of everything else tends to rise with it, including groceries and everyday goods. Dr. Tankersley understands that pressure, and he believes state leaders should always look for ways to keep life more affordable for Alabama families.

Alabama must also continue investing in the roads and bridges that keep our state moving. Revenue from the state gasoline tax is directed into the Alabama Public Road and Bridge Fund, which supports the Alabama Transportation Trust Fund.

Dr. Stewart Tankersley believes government should not be adding to that burden. At a time when families are already stretched thin, state leaders should be focused on lowering costs, not increasing them. He supports repealing the recent gas tax increases and providing real relief to Alabama drivers.

This issue is a cornerstone of Dr. Tankersley’s commitment to making Alabama more affordable and holding politicians in Montgomery accountable. When costs go up because of government decisions, leaders have a responsibility to answer for those decisions and work to correct them.

At the same time, Dr. Tankersley understands that infrastructure is critical. Alabama’s roads, bridges, and highways are essential to economic growth, public safety, and the movement of goods across the state. But taxpayers deserve accountability.

The state gasoline tax feeds into the Alabama Public Road and Bridge Fund and supports the Transportation Trust Fund, which distributes funding to the Alabama Department of Transportation as well as counties and municipalities.

Those dollars must be spent efficiently, transparently, and on the projects they were intended to fund.

Dr. Tankersley believes there is a better way forward, one that maintains strong infrastructure without placing additional pressure on working families. Alabama already has a significant resource in the Alabama Trust Fund, built from oil and gas revenues and designed to support the long-term financial strength of the state.

A portion of those funds can be responsibly used to support transportation improvements, helping modernize highways, repair aging bridges, and expand capacity where it is needed most.

By prioritizing existing resources, eliminating waste, and ensuring transportation dollars are spent where they belong, Alabama can invest in infrastructure while easing the burden on drivers. As Lieutenant Governor and presiding officer of the Alabama Senate, Dr. Tankersley will work with lawmakers to bring greater transparency to transportation funding, demand accountability for how taxpayer dollars are spent, and focus on projects that deliver real results for communities across the state.

Alabama drivers deserve safe roads and reliable infrastructure, but they also deserve relief. Dr. Tankersley is committed to delivering both, because government should respect the hard work it takes to earn every dollar and ensure those dollars are used wisely.
